Español: Figura 1. Descripción general simplista de la estructura y los tipos de cilios.
Estructuralmente, el cilio consta de cuatro partes principales, (1) el cuerpo basal, (2) la zona de transición, (3) el axonema y (4) la membrana ciliar.

Además, hay dos tipos principales de cilio:
1) cilio móvil, que contiene 9 dobletes de microtúbulos externos (MT) y un par de MT en su centro,

2) cilio inmóvil, que tiene 9 dobletes de MT externos pero carece del centro. par de MT.
