Charlemagne (Charles the Great or Charles I), c.742 - 814, founder of the Carolingian Empire and the first Emperor in Western Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire. - Charlemagne has a statue of the Germanic god of the Saxons 'Krodo' torn down and destroyed and has a church built near where it stood.- Engraving by Matthäus Merian the Elder.
