Sandplain Duck Orchid
It was very exciting to find this "Duck Orchid". It is a threatend plant which is difficult to find as they are relatively small and blend into the environment.
The 'head' on these orchids is sensitive and if it is touched, it tucks it inside their abdomen. The plant emits pheromones to attract insects which land on the head that flips inside the abdomen taking the insect with it. The insect pushes past the head getting pollen on its back and repeats the process with another plant.
They also tuck their head inside at night and lift their heads in the morning.
