Built for the 1993 Summer Universiade as venue for indoor events, the center was named for the heir to the Red & White grocery store chain who spearheaded the effort to bring the games to Buffalo, and later came under the ownership of SUNY Erie Community College, who uses it for their basketball and aquatics programs. It is also the venue for Canisius College's aquatics program and has hosted professional wrestling, boxing, and basketball matches.
