Summary

Description
English: Illustration of pride at folio 47v of British Library Additional 37049, an illustrated Yorkshire Carthusian Religious Miscellany. This illustration has been described as follows:
  • In the lower half of the picture pride is represented in the form of a young man dressed in finery. He is assailed by two devils. (From p. 67 of the cited source.)
  • In the fifteenth-century BL MS Additional 37,049 f. 47v a miniature illustrating pride depicts a youth in a tall hat, blue puffed jacket, red breeches, long pyked shoes, with a sword, seized by two devils. Quote from: Robert Easting: St Patrick's Purgatory: Two versions of Owayne Miles and The Vision of William of Stranton together with the long text of the Tractatus de Purgatorio Sancti Patricii, Oxford University Press, 1991, ISBN 0-19-722300-1, p. 224, note SR166ff, SA170ff.
  • [..] this character's garments are of complex cut and elaborate tailoring; the hose being shaped to fit even around the knees, the chest improved and emphasised by padding, and with unnaturally wide shoulders. His tightly belted waist is so narrow that it suggests corseting. [..] With his wide shoulders and puffed sleeves Pride is manifestly guilty of the charge levelled at all those men of fashion from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries: that of distorting the image of God and presuming to improve on his handiwork. Quote from: Samantha Mullaney: Fashion and Morality in BL MS Add. 37049, out of John Scattergood (ed.): Texts and their contexts: Papers from the Early Book Society, Four Courts Press, Dublin 1997, ISBN 1-85182-209-7, p. 76.
Please note that the original drawing is colored but that all pictures in the cited book are in grayscale.
