There was not acloud in the sky, and the meadow wascovered with thousands and thousands ofgreen grass blades, each so small and ten- 2 Among the Farmyard People der, and yet together making a most beau-tiful carpet for the feet of the farmyardpeople, and offering them sweet and juicyfood after their winter fare of hay andgrain. Truly it was a day to make onelaugh aloud for joy. The alder tasselsfluttered and danced in the spring breeze,while the smallest and shyest of the wil-low pussies crept from their little brownhouses on the branches to grow in thesunshine. Tittle-ittle-ittle-ee! Tittle-ittle-ittle-ee! And this time it was louder andclearer than before. The Swallows ! cried the Oxen toeach other. Then they straightened theirstrong necks and bellowed to the Horses,who were drawing the plow in the fieldbeyond, The Swallows are coming ! As soon as the Horses reached the endof the furrow and could rest a minute,they tossed their heads and whinniedwith delight. Then they looked around
