Benjamin F. Reinhaet, portrait, genre, and historical painter, was bornnear Waynesburg, in Western Pennsylvania, on the 29th of August, 1829.At the age of fourteen, and with scarcely any previous instruction, he beganto exercise himself in portraiture, succeeding so well that by the time he wastwenty-one years old he had laid up money enough to obtain the immediategoal of his desires, namely, a visit to Europe. For three years thereafter hestudied art in the schools of Diisseldorf, Paris, and Rome. On returning toAmerica he resumed the practice of portrait-painting, and was invited intoservice by the friends of Pesident Buchanan, Vice-President Dallas, JudgeCoulter, and many other distinguished men, both in the North and South,including oilicers in the Confederate army and navy.
