| Description |
A portion of the Nine Dragon Screen made of glazed tiles. The Forbidden City is the largest palace complex in the world. It was ‘forbidden’ because no one could enter or leave without the emperor’s permission. Constructed from 1406 to 1420, it covers 72 hectares/178 acres. The 980 surviving buildings comprise 8,886 rooms. Over the succeeding centuries it was the home of 24 emperors until 1924 when the last emperor of China was driven out. Today the Forbidden City is formally known as the Palace Museum. The Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
