A spectacle fighter game, also sometimes known as a character action game, is a genre of action video games featuring intricate combat systems focused on mechanical skill, long strings of combo attacks, and visual and aesthetic flair.[1] In place of conventional, objective-oriented forms of combat difficulty seen in other genres, player performance in spectacle fighters is typically tracked with a "style meter" increasing in value when the player successfully performs unique attack sequences against enemies and decreasing when the player is hit or remains idle, a mechanic introduced by genre pioneer Devil May Cry and adopted by Bayonetta and other spectacle fighter games.[2][3][4]
The term "spectacle fighter" was coined by writer and critic Yahtzee Croshaw in his review of MadWorld for Escapist magazine, citing Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and God Hand as examples.[3] More recent listings include titles such as NieR: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, or Furi, with an increased focus on gameplay difficulty or the style meter.[1][2] The genre has also been termed "character action", although both Croshaw and Rock Paper Shotgun magazine criticized the term as unhelpful and vague.[2][5]
Croshaw would later praise the rhythm-based Hi-Fi Rush as a compelling innovation upon the genre.[6] The first-person shooter Ultrakill combines a Devil May Cry-inspired style meter with traditional boomer shooter gameplay, leading PC Gamer magazine to term the game a "spectacle shooter" at the time of its early access release.[7]
